Small lawn

Measure the grass and access routes before comparing rated capacities. This guide explains the useful checks without a universal area multiplier.

Measurement example: two lawns, one passage

  1. Front lawn

    120 m²

  2. Measure the passage

    Clear width, step and slope

  3. Back lawn

    80 m²

200 m² in total: check the connection between areas too.

Measure the lawn and sketch each zone

Start with the actual grass area, excluding the house, patio, paths and beds. Add the lawn sections and sketch their connections. For example, 120 m² at the front and 80 m² behind the house means 200 m² of grass, but also two areas the mower must be able to service. Their combined area says nothing about access.

Mark steps, gates, roots, slopes and changes in level. Measure the narrowest point between fixed obstacles, rather than the general width of a path. Keep these measurements with your shortlist so you can ask specific questions before buying.

Size the mower without an arbitrary multiplier

Rated area is a starting point to read alongside manufacturer conditions. There is no universal rule to halve it for an L-shaped garden or divide it by three for obstacles. Compare your area, layout and the hours during which you are willing to let the mower work.

For short operating windows, look for documented work rate and charging pauses. Runtime in minutes alone cannot establish daily coverage without the other conditions. If your garden is close to rated capacity, ask for compatibility to be checked against the plan. Do not automatically buy twice the capacity: a bigger battery will not solve an impassable bottleneck.

Wire, vision or LiDAR: start with installation

A small lawn does not dictate one navigation technology. For wired models, check the route, boundary clearances and handling of separate areas. For virtual mapping, examine boundary creation, exclusion zones and positioning requirements. Your willingness to install and maintain these elements matters too.

Two examples illustrate the difference: MOVA ViAX 250 uses vision, while WORX WR167E uses a wired installation. These are not a ranking or equivalent offers. Check full specifications and the exact package before comparing costs. “Wireless” does not guarantee instant setup on every property.

Edges and passages shape everyday use

Distinguish a lawn flush with a path from an edge against a wall, fence or bed. Ask how close the blade can cut in your layout and what manual finishing remains. Mower width, cutting width and minimum passage are three different measurements.

For example, the Sunseeker S4 manual requires passages wider than 80 cm. That limit does not apply to every LiDAR mower. Measure your bottleneck and check the exact model’s instructions, including room to turn and access the station. A photograph of a mower between flowerbeds does not prove it will fit your garden.

Budget for ownership

Compare complete baskets: mower, station, power supply and necessary installation materials. Add optional accessories, consumables and any paid connected services separately. A garage in a marketing photo is not automatically included.

Allow for maintenance and seasonal storage. Check blade availability, documentation and support in your country. A price from another market or date is not your final cost. Open the local offer from Niva to check price, availability and package contents before deciding.

Prepare for October and the next season

Use October to note access problems: cluttered passages, damp areas, the station approach or low branches. These observations help plan installation; they do not predict the performance of a mower you have not tried. For an installed mower, follow its manual when adapting use and preparing storage.

Your shortlist can fit on one page: a measured plan, grass area, constraints, operating windows, total budget and three models. Add each manual link and unresolved questions. This produces a reasoned shortlist that remains useful when promotions change.

FAQ

Must rated capacity be twice the lawn area?

No. Check model conditions, layout and operating windows. A universal multiplier can lead to an unnecessarily large mower without solving garden constraints.

Can a wireless mower go anywhere?

No. Check passages, steps, slopes, edges and positioning requirements in the exact manual.

Which budget should I compare?

The cost of the package suited to your installation, including necessary accessories and maintenance. Check optional extras and paid services separately.
