LiDAR guide

A LiDAR robot mower uses measured distances around it to establish its position. Learn how to interpret the technology, prepare your garden and compare real models without confusing navigation with safety.

Distinguish three functions

  1. Locate

Positioning and map: where is the mower?

  2. Detect

Sensors and software: what does it recognise around it?

  3. Cut

Disc and body: which grass can it reach?

A guide to reading specifications. These functions complement each other; one sensor does not guarantee all three outcomes.

Separate sensing, mapping and movement

LiDAR measures distances using laser light. Software uses these measurements to represent the surroundings and estimate the mower’s position. On relevant mowers, the map supports virtual working boundaries created during installation. The sensor, mapping software and wheel controls perform different jobs.

A quoted detection range is therefore neither a mowing area nor a prescribed clearance around obstacles. Do not turn a sensor figure in metres into a promise of garden coverage. Compare each specification on its own terms.

Under trees, inspect the entire route

LiDAR-based positioning can be worth investigating where satellite reception is uncertain. It does not establish suitability for every wooded garden. Record low branches, roots, narrow routes between hedges and lawn areas without a usable connection, then check the manual.

Take three photographs for the supplier: the proposed dock position, the narrowest passage and the most obstructed area. Ask about the exact model. LiDAR alone cannot establish better traction, the ability to climb a step or freedom from manual intervention.

Compare two actual implementations

Dreame describes the A1 Pro with its OmniSense 3D LiDAR system. MOVA describes the LiDAX Ultra with UltraView 2.0 combining 3D LiDAR and vision. These identify manufacturer-stated equipment; they are not a Niva comparative field test. The product links below lead to the relevant model details.

Compare positioning, detection, minimum passage width, gradient and cutting heights separately. MOVA states a passage width of at least 60 cm for the LiDAX Ultra series. Do not apply this threshold to another LiDAR mower, and check the required edge clearances within the passage.

Map boundaries and check the return journey

Draw the lawn and exclusion areas before creating the first map. A virtual boundary must not substitute for the clearances or physical barriers required around a pool or drop by the manual. Detection features do not replace garden preparation rules.

Check every connection and the return to the charging station. For example, the European Sunseeker S4 manual requires passages wider than 80 cm. Requirements vary between LiDAR machines; measuring the mower’s body alone cannot establish whether a route is usable.

Maintain the sensors and record interventions

Find the instructions for cleaning the sensor, wheels and station. A water protection rating does not automatically allow pressure washing. The S4 manual distinguishes gentle cleaning from unsuitable methods. Always follow the procedure for the model you own.

After changing the garden, inspect the map and observe an outing. If the mower stops, record the location, time, ground condition and displayed message. This gives support useful diagnostic context instead of treating all LiDAR mowers as either reliable or unsuitable.

FAQ

Does a LiDAR mower need satellites?

It depends on the architecture. Check the positioning sensors used by the exact model; LiDAR and satellite navigation can be combined.

Does LiDAR detect every obstacle?

No. Consult the detection limits and garden preparation requirements in the manual.

Can all LiDAR mowers use the same passages?

No. Passage width, traction, slope limits and edge clearances remain model-specific.
